Saffron and Wild Herbs Tour

from € 25 to €45/person

Journey to gorgeous Nera river valley, where you'll arrive at a family run farm set near a XII century Romanesque Abbey.  

 

Here you will learn about saffron, the world's most expensive spice, obtained from the red gold pistils of Crocus flowers.

You will discover the secrets of cultivation, the history and legends about this precious spice and in season - generally October - you will be able to participate to the harvest, a truly unique experience.

 

Your visit ends with a delicious lunch with produce from the farm including recipes that use saffron.


Throughout the year you have the option to join a wild foraging tour or rent a mountain bike or e-bike to explore the area on your own or with a guide.

Tour Information

  • a welcome drink made with wild aromatic herbs

  • a 2-hour tour of the farm which, depending on season might include viewing of blossoming apple trees or saffron field, harvest of wild or medicinal herbs.

  • a 30 min. educational on the cultivation of saffron

  • 4 courses lunch with drinks 

Every day starting at 11:00 am.

Tour limited to 12 people, reservation required at least 2 days in advance. 

Program

  • 9:30 am Arrive at the saffron farm. Enjoy a welcome drink and an introduction to the culture, history and cultivation of saffron in Central Italy. Visit the "Orto dei semplici" a small garden with medicinal and aromatic plants which have been used for centuries for common medicines and for cooking.  In season, you will be able to taste organic fresh berries or apples produced by the farm and to see the saffron blossoms.

 

  • 12:30 pm Enjoy a home-style 3 courses meal made with organic produce of the farm 
     

  • 3.00 pm the Explore the Valnerina with its tiny villages, Romanesque monasteries and gleaming river, ending in Spoleto for the evening or back to your accommodation. 

 

  • As an alternative, continue with a wild foraging tour or rent a mountain bike or e-bike to explore the area on your own or with a guide.

Please note that the design, planning and reservation service of this tour is offered by Festa Tours  in combination with a cooking class and/or a farm stay at Alla Madonna del Piatto near Assisi.

It is also possible to book this tour if you have booked a cooking class with us but you are staying at a different accommodation.
