Food Festival and Medieval Fair Tours

costs depending on location and transport

In Umbria, the heart of rural Italy, life still revolves around a cycle of holidays and festivals often derived from ancient rituals, marking the change of seasons, the planting or harvest of crops, the position of the stars.

From village sagra (a food festival), to religious processions, to historic re-enactment of war, dances or games, the Umbrian villages are often buzzing with activity on the weekends.

Plan to include one of these fun events during your trip to Umbria. You will find out that there is almost always some opportunity join the festivities and meet the locals, especially if the weather is nice.

Tour Information

Food Festivals and medieval feasts are generally available on weekends from April to November. Calendimaggio in Assisi, Sagra della Gaite in Bevagna, Sagra della Cipolla in Cannara and a few others, run through several days offering a busy calendar of events including music, parades, jousts, all sorts of ancient or modern games.

We advise to arrive early to secure parking and avoid queues at the food stands. It's always worth to check the festivals website as it's becoming popular to reserve your meal or your table online to skip the lines.

Festival tour and Cooking class

Our cooking classes take place from 11:00 am to approx. 3:00 pm, therefore it's often possible to combine the two activities in one day based on the following program:

  • 11:00 am Arrive at Alla Madonna del Piatto Cooking School near Assisi. Enjoy a welcome drink and an introduction to the culture, history and culinary traditions of rural Umbria, then don your apron and start cooking.

  • 1:30 pm Enjoy the 4 courses meal that you just created on our beautiful terrace overlooking Assisi ending around 3:30 pm.

  • 4:00 pm Return to your accommodation to rest or take an afternoon constitutional then get prepared for a fun evening. Most food fairs and village festivals start at around 7 pm with the taverna (rustic outdoor restaurant) opening for dinner.
